What is a settlement agreement?
A settlement agreement is normally used as an alternative to pursuing legal action. Under a settlement agreement an employer will usually pay compensation to the employee. In return, the employee agrees not to bring claims against the employer.
The employee will often also agree to the termination of their employment under the settlement agreement.
Why do I need legal advice?
UnionLine is committed to ensuring the best outcome for the union members it represents, never acting for employers.
Settlement agreements can be very lengthy and complex. Our settlement agreements team are experienced and qualified to offer advice on this area of the law. They are on hand to provide advice using plain language rather than legal jargon, to ensure that you understand the wording of your settlement agreement.
By law, you must also receive legal advice as to the terms and effect of the settlement agreement, and your employer will generally contribute to our legal fees for advising you.
It can be a distressing time when your employment ends but, at UnionLine, we aim to handle the settlement agreement process with sympathy, understanding and professionalism.
