Have you suffered discrimination at work?
Have you been harassed at work because of your race? Perhaps you have been consistently overlooked for promotion because you’re a woman?
Are you excluded from team updates because your wheelchair can’t negotiate the narrow corridor to the meeting room? Or maybe you were dismissed when you told your manager that you are gay?
All of the above could amount to unlawful discrimination.
Discrimination can take many forms. It can range from physical assault to more subtle actions such as excluding someone from a group lunch. Discriminatory conduct may go on for a long time or be a one-off act.
Whatever the case, the effect of discrimination is often devastating.
Any discrimination claim must be based on one of the following nine protected characteristics:
- Age
- Disability
- Gender reassignment
- Marriage and civil partnership
- Pregnancy and maternity
- Race
- Religion or belief
- Sex
- Sexual orientation
What to do if you have suffered discrimination in the workplace
UnionLine’s legal advisors can offer you advice and support if you believe you are suffering discrimination at work.
We will also advise you on making a claim in the Employment Tribunal, and we will be honest with you about your prospects of success with any claim. Union members may be able to bring a claim in the Employment Tribunal through UnionLine.
Please also note that claims for discrimination in the Employment Tribunal must be brought within three months of the alleged discriminatory act. You must also comply with the ACAS Early Conciliation procedure, which will affect the time limit for your claim.
